SAAS Recruitment Software

Recruitment agencies aren't getting what they need from software

Current recruitment software isn't doing its job of helping agencies to run their business better because it's too expensive, over-complicated and doesn't account for the user experience, according to new provider Apricot.

Recruitment software isn't working

"Systems for managing vacancies and candidates should make life easier for small agencies, but they can have the opposite effect," according to Ben Jeffery, sales manager at Apricot. "You get over-complicated screens, unnecessary features, and slow processes. So instead of making work easier, recruitment software actually leaves people feeling frustrated."

This is probably because of typical software development processes. "Programmers prefer a tangible list of things to do," says Jeffery. "The experience of people trying to use their systems isn't at the front of their minds, and it takes work to reverse this."

The notion of 'software bloat' also comes from putting the number of features over the user experience. "Sales people like to list software features because it sounds like you're getting more for you money," Jeffery claims. "But most agencies won't ever use some of the features. And software shouldn't be about how many features you get. It should be trying to make your life easier."

A better way to work

With the rapid increase of web access and speed, a new kind of software has emerged. 'Software as a service', or SAAS, describes web-based systems which typically charge a monthly fee to customers who access it with a browser like Internet Explorer.

According to SAAS suppliers like Apricot, this option puts the user experience first because customers have to choose to keep paying for it. "With month-to-month payments, customers can leave you any time," says Jeffery. "If you don't make the software easy to use and helpful to their business, you just won't get paid."

Online software is simpler and quicker to learn because people are familiar with the technology. Most people browse the internet and are used to things like links, buttons and online forms, so there's less of a learning curve.

"Recruitment agencies deserve software that will improve their business and their working life," notes Jeffery. "Apricot makes the administrative side of the recruitment process simpler, so consultants can focus on the important job of helping their candidates and clients."
